A large number of security operatives were said to have been deployed to Ekwulobia where IPOB had planned to hold a rally on Wednesday with its leader, Nnamdi Kanu in attendance.
IPOB members were said to have defied the heavy presence of security personnel and began parading the streets singing and waving Biafra flags.
An eyewitness told newsmen that the security operatives confiscated the Biafran flags, caps, shirts and other items being sold by some youths, thereby drawing the ire of the IPOB members who then tried to attack the policemen.
In response, police operatives dispersed the IPOB crowd with tear gas and a stampede ensued leading to the death of one of the group’s members.
Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mrs Nkeiru Nwode who confirmed that security operatives were on the ground at Ekwulobia, however, denied the death of any IPOB member.
“The presence of the security men was to secure the place from being attacked by hoodlums. People should not take laws into their hands; the security operatives in Anambra are working day and night to secure the environment and are not ready to allow miscreants take over the society,” Nwode said.
