Which German-class can I take part in?
by Naeem Nazari
In the district of Tübingen there are very different German courses for refugees. Which course you are allowed to participate in is determined by the asylum status and the country of origin.
Integration Course (up to B1): The most important German course is the Integration Course. The goal of the integration course is to reach level B1. If a person knows the Latin alphabet, they start with A1 and attend the course for 600 hours followed by 100 hours of orientation. That takes about 7 months. Those who do not know the Latin letters start with literacy and the course lasts more than 7 months. At the end of the integration course there is an exam. Passing the exam, you get a B1 certificate. If you do not pass the exam, you can repeat the course again – but this time only with 300 hours.
Important: If, despite the repetition, you also fail the B1 exam for the second time, you can attend a DeuFöV course with an A2 or B1 finish. For the eligibility you have to contact his employment agency in the job center or in the employment agency.
Who can take part in the integration course? All refugees whose asylum application was recognized by the BAMF. In addition, refugees from so-called “A” countries are already allowed to attend this course during the asylum procedure, which is currently: Syria, Iraq, Iran, Eritrea and Somalia. It is important that these persons register for an integration course directly after applying for asylum. If they do not do that and their asylum application is rejected, then they may no longer attend an integration course.
Eligibility: Recognized refugees may be eligible for the integration course from the immigration office or from the job center. Persons from A-countries who are in the asylum procedure can go directly to a course provider. The course applicant applies for admission to the integration course for the person at the BAMF.
Where: In the district of Tübingen there are integration courses in Tübingen and Rottenburg. In Tübingen the Adult Education Center (VHS), InFö, Vatter Bildungszentrum und Sprachinstitut Tübingen (SIT) offer this course.
FlüAG-Deutschkurse (A1): These are language courses for refugees whose asylum application was rejected and who have a tolerance and those who are in the asylum procedure with permission to stay and are not from the five A-countries. In short, those who are not allowed to attend an integration course can attend these courses. The FlüAG courses start with the goal of literacy or A1.

DeuFöV language courses (B2, C1): B1 means everyday German and one can express oneself with simple words. But if you want to do a training or even study, B1 is not enough. B2 is recommended for training. You must have at least C1 or equivalent certificates (DSH, Test DAF) for a degree.
Eligibility for B2 / C1 courses: These courses can also be attended by persons with a permit and residence permit in the asylum procedure. If you get money from the Jobcenter, you can get the eligibility from the Jobcenter. If you have nothing to do with the Job Center, then you can contact the Employment Agency and get the permission from the Employment Agency.
